CoWeb - City of Women goes Web! (E-Zine)

type=digital_archives

Info:
CoWeb gets produced once a year during the City of Women festival. Every day of the festival, the events are documented online; in various languages, critical thoughts are formed about the events, discussions with festival guests take place, and the audience is asked about their opinions. Coweb represents the idea of the creation of DIY do-it-yourself web content and presents an opposition to mass media while at the same time serving as a form of critique of their treatment of culture.

Statement:
In the Coweb project – City of Women Goes Web! – artists from various parts of the world join together for the duration of the festival to form a team of writers.

CoWeb is a web-based platform and workshop of ad hoc publishing/editing which, as opposed to editing/publishing, is exactly what it sounds like: first publishing, then editing, emphasizing the significance of content over the previously assumed form. Both the local and the international edition of CoWeb use the “do it yourself” principle to help create the image of the City of Women festival in the media; the festival – like many other public events – is facing a lack of reflection in the media and discourse. Reflection is one of the missing moral tools that we are able to establish precisely due to the accessibility of the communications-information meta-network.

Various media houses keep marginalizing and driving out cultural content, all too often replacing it with populist and commercial content. The need for media, focused on culture and critical discussion of reality, has thus never been greater. With the Coweb project, the City of Women wishes to offer a platform where the creation of such content could feel at home.
