Slutwalk Newcastle 2011

Location

Grey's MonumentNewcastle-Upon-Tyne
United Kingdom

Inspired by our sisters in Toronto, 4th of June will be Newcastle's first SlutWalk!

After comments made by Officer Sanguinetti of the Toronto police force, his audience decided enough was enough and it was time to make a stand against the culture of blaming the victim in sexual assault cases.

We are not necessarily asking our attendees that they “dress like sluts” as this idea is subjective, so please come dressed however you like, hijabs, hoodies, hotpants - whatever!. We welcome men, women, both and neither to march alongside us :)

Slutwalk Chicago 2011

Location

James R. Thompson CenterChicago, IL
United States

Inspired by SlutWalk Toronto, SlutWalk Chicago is a march in support of education and against intolerance.

On January 24, 2011, a representative of the Toronto Police Service was quoted saying, "Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized." SlutWalk Chicago aims to combat the myth of "the slut" and the culture of victim blaming that prevails the world over.
Our mission is to enforce the truth that those who experience sexual assault are never at fault-- no exceptions. We seek to combat a culture that teaches "don't get raped," as opposed to "don't rape."

Slutwalk Glasgow 2011

Location

George SquareGlasgow
United Kingdom

This event was set up in solidarity with our Canadian sisters after a Toronto police representative claimed women would stop getting raped if they “stopped dressing like sluts”. We believe this is wrong – the only thing that causes RAPE is RAPISTS.

We want to claim back the word “slut” and take away its power. We want to stop victims being blamed, and blaming themselves. We want to fight sexual stereotypes, and the stereotypes surrounding sexual assault. We’re ANGRY about the way the victims of sexual violence are treated and perceived and we want to change this dramatically.

Slutwalk Cardiff 2011

Location

City Hall, Gorsedd GardensCardiff
United Kingdom

When a Toronto police officer suggested that ‘women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised’, he provoked a fierce backlash: ‘SlutWalking’.

This movement began with ‘SlutWalk Toronto’, and a march through the city on 3rd April, 2011. Since then, the SlutWalking movement has gained huge international support, with satellite SlutWalk groups appearing across Canada and the US. It has since spread to the UK and Europe, and now we are bringing it to Cardiff.
