Olympia, WA in the United States saw the inagural Ladyfest launched 1-6 August 2000. Put together by a team of women, some who were involved in Riot Grrrl, this festival sought to create more lady-friendly spaces for women and transgender folks in counter-cultures and activism. The organizing team explicitly told the crowd to go home and organize something in their own towns; hence Ladyfest as an international phenomena was born!
"Ladyfest London is an arts festival which celebrates female creativity in all its many forms. We aim to provide a platform for women’s talents in music, art, comedy, photography, film, debate, written and spoken word, etc. Ladyfests have been taking place all over the world in the past few years and Ladyfest London will be taking place from 9th- 11th May 2008.
Nina is a prolific DIY creator, making zines, illustration, and music. Here she talks about Ladyfest as a temporary community and a much-needed place to renew your energy and creativity.
I have always felt that Riot Grrrl is a movement that offers a platform for women to express themselves in any way they feel necessary. This project offers a unique insight into an underground feminist subculture, showing the dedicated and creative people within it. I shall be photographing and collecting Portraits of people who feel they have been inspired or moved by Riot Grrrl, through the internet community and various photo booths which I will be setting up at feminist events over Britain.
