In this series of symposia and workshops, we will discuss the question of how artistic interventions can initiate social and political processes and open up new perspectives. Artistic projects will be presented and discussed, and ideas will be developed and presented as interventions in public space.

The term “intervention” – understood as the opposite of “convention” – has been used in the area of fine art within the last 20 years, particularly in connection to social and political concerns. However, the term has rarely been defined in pertinent art encyclopaedia. The glossary of the online publication “Zeit für Vermittlung” (Institute for Art Education, Züricher Hochschule der Künste) has the following definition:

”The term of interventionist art was coined in the 1980s for artistic works that intervene decidedly in their social surroundings. Thereby they transgress programmatically the space allocated to art and search for a debate with the “outside”, with the local context, with political and social movements. Art and activism find in their practices of intervention common ground and consequently invent new forms of the political, such as the well-known disruptions of the male-dominated art world by the Guerrilla Girls or the theatrical demonstrations of the Volxtheaterkarawane against the European border and asylum politics.” (Translation by the conference organizers)

We will give particular attention to anti-racist and feminist strategies in the field of contemporary art, which intervene into hegemonic social discourses and address the various perspectives of specific artistic practices. Anti-racist and feminist strategies name existing power relations and social inequalities by critically reflecting the social status quo. But they also draw on images of individual and collective memory and put them together in a new way. Anti-racist and feminist strategies develop an imagination for a different, less stereotypical and less suppressed future by outlining spaces for alternative identities and describing historical and contemporary alternative perspectives.

The series consists of three one-day symposia and two three-day workshops:

Workshop II: guerilla comics: kunst_intervention_alltag: Ein Workshop mit Ka Schmitz (in German) (6–8.11.2013)

The events are open to all students of the University of Salzburg, Mozarteum University and the interested public. The workshops have limited spaces for participants, therefore early registration is required. There is no conference or workshop fee. The events are organized by Dr. Elke Zobl from the program area Arts & Cultural Production, Schwerpunkt Wissenschaft und Kunst, in cooperation with Dr. Rosa Reitsamer, Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien.

In dieser Veranstaltungsreihe diskutieren Studierende, Lehrende und Interessierte, wie künstlerische Interventionen soziale und politische Prozesse in Gang setzen und neue Perspektiven eröffnen können. Es werden Projekte präsentiert und diskutiert, sowie eigene Ideen entwickelt und als Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum vorgestellt.

Der Begriff der „Intervention“ – verstanden als Gegenbegriff zu „Konvention“ – wird in den letzten 20 Jahren im Feld der bildenden Kunst vor allem in Verbindung mit sozialen und politischen Anliegen und einem kulturellen Aktivismus verwendet. Er ist jedoch in einschlägigen Kunstlexika (noch) kaum definiert. Im Glossar der Online-Publikation „Zeit für Vermittlung“ (Institute for Art Education, Züricher Hochschule der Künste) wird der Begriff wie folgt beschrieben:

„Der Begriff der Interventionskunst wurde in den 1980er Jahren geprägt für künstlerische Arbeiten, die dezidiert in ihr soziales Umfeld eingreifen. Dazu überschreiten sie programmatisch den der Kunst zugemessenen Raum und suchen die Auseinandersetzung mit dem «Aussen», mit dem lokalen Kontext, mit politischen und sozialen Bewegungen. Kunst und Aktivismus finden in Praktiken der Intervention zueinander und erfinden dabei mithin populäre Formen des Politischen, wie etwa die bekannten Störungen des nach wie vor männlich dominierten Kunstbetriebs durch die Guerilla Girls oder die theatralen Demonstrationen der Volxtheaterkarawane gegen die europäische Grenz- und Asylpolitik.“

Wir widmen uns spezifisch antirassistischen und feministischen Strategien in der zeitgenössischen Kunst, die in hegemoniale gesellschaftliche Diskurse intervenieren, und loten die unterschiedlichen Ansätze einzelner künstlerischer Praktiken aus. Antirassistische und feministische Strategien benennen bestehende Machtverhältnisse und soziale Ungleichheiten, indem sie den gesellschaftlichen Status Quo kritisch reflektieren. Sie greifen aber auch auf Bilder der individuellen und kollektiven Erinnerung zurück und setzen diese neu zusammen. Antirassistische und feministische Strategien entwickeln somit eine Imagination für eine andere, weniger stereotype und unterdrückende Zukunft, indem sie einen Raum für alternative Identitäten sowie historische und aktuelle Gegenentwürfe entwickeln.

Die Reihe besteht aus drei eintägigen Symposien und zwei dreitägigen Workshops:

Kein Konferenz- oder Workshopbeitrag erforderlich. Die Reihe wird von Dr. Elke Zobl am Programmbereich Contemporary Arts & Cultural Production, Schwerpunkt Wissenschaft und Kunst organisiert und veranstaltet. Die Symposien werden in Kooperation mit Dr. Rosa Reitsamer, Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien, durchgeführt.
