make.aZINE fair (Vienna, 20th - 26th May 2013)

Zines represent an art form that looks back on a long history. The origin of zines can be traced back to the science fiction scene, but they also enjoyed great popularity within the British and American punk scene as well as during the feminist movement in the 1970s. Far from standartised mass media communication and knowledge dissemination, zines served as mouthpieces for minorities, fringe groups and subcultures. The project make.aZINE aims at making zines as an art form known and useable to a wide audience. The goal is to establish an international network that continuously conveys the actuality of zines as an art form and that shapes the appearance of this art form in a multifaceted way.

The exhibition of Michael Wegerer's international zine collection and selected national exhibits will give the audience of the in.print.out 2013 an understanding of the artistic and contentual possibilities for contemporary zine production. Via internet it is possible to participate in the project make.aZINE: Everybody has the opportunity to submit their selfproduced zines. From 20th to 23th May 2013 the project space will be used as a production site.

The zines produced at the project space will then be put up for sale during the make.aZINE fair from 23th to 26th May 2013. At the invitation of the Graphikkinder also external national and international zine producers will present their products and are thereby able to contribute to a diverse overview of the current developments and manifestations of this art form.

make.aZINE is a project by the Graphikkinder in collaboration with Michael Wegerer and the International Print Network Vienna 2013. We want to thank the Vienna Künstlerhaus, the artists' society Gesellschaft bildender Künstlerinnen und Künstler Österreichs als well as the companies Sharp and Europapier for their active support.

make.aZINE and spread the word!

Das Zine blickt als Gattung auf eine lange Geschichte zurück. Seine Ursprünge liegen in der Science Fiction-Szene, jedoch erfreute es sich auch in der britischen und US-amerikanischen Punkszene, sowie in der feministischen Bewegung der 1970er Jahre großer Beliebtheit.

Fernab normierter massenmedialer Kommunikation und Wissensverbreitung diente es Minderheiten, Randgruppen und Subkulturen als Sprachrohr. Ziel des Projekts make.aZINE ist es, die Gattung Zine einem breiten Publikum bekannt und nutzbar zu machen. Es soll ein internationales Netzwerk entstehen, welches kontinuierlich die Aktualität der Gattung vermittelt und das Erscheinungsbild mitgestaltet.

Die Ausstellung der internationalen Zine-Sammlung Michael Wegerers, sowie ausgewählter nationaler Exponate eröffnen dem Ausstellungspublikum von in.print.out die gestalterischen und inhaltlichen Möglichkeiten der zeitgenössischen Zine-Produktion. Via Internet ist die Beteiligung an dem Projekt make.aZINE möglich, indem jede/r die Möglichkeit hat, ein selbst produziertes Zine einzureichen. Ein Projektraum wird von 20. bis 23. Mai 2013 als Produktionsstätte genutzt. Die entstandenen Zines werden von 23. bis 26. Mai 2013 im Rahmen der make.aZINE-fair zum Verkauf angeboten. Auf Einladung der Graphikkinder präsentieren auch externe nationale und internationale Zine-Produzenten ihre Erzeugnisse und tragen damit zu einem vielfältigen Überblick über die aktuellen Entwicklungen und Erscheinungsformen der Gattung bei.
